About FilmLab

Hi there! My name is Abe Fettig, and I’m building FilmLab. I’ve been writing software for almost twenty years, and shooting film for about five years.

I love shooting film, but for a while now I’ve been wanting and easier way to view my negatives and share my film images. So I started thinking about making an app for digitizing film with a smartphone. For a while I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to get good-quality results, but recent advances in phone camera technology (particularly the ability to capture raw sensor data) made the idea seem more promising. Finally I just had to to dive in and see if I could get it to work.

I started working on FilmLab in January 2017. By May, I had a working prototype ready to demo. During late May and early June, I ran a Kickstarter campaign for FilmLab, which became one of the top 10 most-backed projects ever in the photography category. It was really exciting to see that there were so many people into the idea.

Thanks to everyone who backed the Kickstarter campaign, I’m going to be able to spend the summer working full time on FilmLab. I’m current getting the first beta versions ready for testing, and FilmLab 1.0 should be ready to release by this fall.
